The modern era offers not only rapidly changing technologies but also a shifting conception of the teacher’s role. Especially in the teaching of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), it is no longer a matter of simply imparting facts and memorising them. It is no longer entirely necessary. Today’s teacher needs to be a guide in the digital world, a creator of inspiring tasks and assignments, a mentor to support the educational journey, and a trainer of critical thinking in a world overwhelmed by information. And sometimes it is also necessary to be a student again, who is not afraid to learn new things, in a very fast pace of technological innovations. Which can sometimes be a big challenge.
Which skills are essential for a STEM teacher?
To teach STEM effectively today, a combination of three areas is essential: Expertise, Didactic skills and Digital literacy. At a minimum, a teacher should be proficient in basic technological tools – e.g. presentation tools, but also digital platforms at a basic level. This is practically impossible to do without today. At the same time, however, students also need to develop skills that technology alone cannot replace: clear communication, the ability to lead a group, develop group collaboration, create interdisciplinary connections and foster curiosity.
The path towards continuous development
Supporting professional development is key. Projects such as EDIGIT help educators from different countries to share examples of good practice, gain fresh impetus and learn digital tools that can enrich teaching and better prepare students for the future. Thus helping to connect important aspects and develop the pedagogical competences of the modern STEM educator. We are proud that both our Gymnasium J. Guth-Jarkovský and J. Guth-Jarkovský Primary School have been involved in these international projects for several years.
One thing is certain – a modern STEM teacher is one who is not afraid of change. Because it is the willingness to learn, to try new ways and to develop one’s own competences that gives teaching meaning and energy, which can be motivating and inspiring not only for students but also for colleagues in the teaching staff. But it takes courage not to be discouraged by setbacks or obstacles.
